Africa’s oldest botanic garden – the Durban Botanic Gardens – will be ablaze with lights like never before as the 2018 Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights kicks off on December 14 .
Event organiser Alene Naidoo, says: “The Trail of Lights is all about enjoying the festive season together with friends and family. We look forward to welcoming everyone down to the gardens for a night out of sharing, giving and good old-fashioned fun,”
Until December 30, visitors can indulge in Magic Lighting’s interactive lighting display along with The Talking Tree, magical Festive Characters, cupcake decorating and the Orchid House.
Santa’s Grotto will be manned by the team from CROW. Look out for Father Christmas’ unique Durban-style sleigh, a few animal friends from the Natural Science Museum and tons of festive activities guided by magical “elf helpers”.
Hidden away in the bromeliad garden, The Enchanted Castle, complete with walk-through pathways and peep-through fairytale scenes, will delight the little ones.
For those that may be a little older (but still young at heart), The Tropic Jazz Band, arranged by Beat-Route, will provide live music every night from 19:30 to 20:30 in the main entertainment area. In addition, live music activations in other parts of the garden will take place throughout the evening.
Crossing generations, members from The Association for the Aged (TAFTA) will regale the children with Stories from the Claus’. TAFTA will also be hiring out wheelchairs for this wheelchair and pram-friendly event.
This year, the Tree of Remembrance offers an opportunity to pay tribute to loved ones no longer with us, during this special time of year. And you can make your own decorations for your home Christmas tree at the Bauble-making Factory. Both activities will be run by Cupcakes of Hope.
Some last-minute Christmas shopping and craft is on the cards at the Elf Village Market, where local traders and crafters will have the opportunity to sell their wares. Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to various charities.
Finally, the diverse Food Garden will feature up to 20 food vendors and food trucks. From Mexican food, gourmet burgers and pizzas to curries, coffees and tons of other options, there will be something to suit every taste bud.
