Sixty + Counts is a portrait exhibition of elderly citizens across Cape Town’s townships, in celebration of the International Day of Older Persons and Older Persons Week in South Africa. Open till October 29 at the Alliance Française du Cap (155 Loop Street, Cape Town), the exhibition aims to remind us of the strength and elegance of the elderly.
It is assumed that the elderly in communities are the most respected but they are often the forgotten, neglected and even abused. This portrait exhibition showcases the stories of the elderly which is embodied in their faces.
The exhibition is a partnership between the Embassy of France in South Africa and Ikamva Labantu – an NGO that runs senior clubs and outreach programmes throughout Cape Town’s townships. From October 12 all funds raised through the sale of the portraits are donated to the Ikamva Labantu Seniors Programme.
